What to Do Before and After Donating Blood
Apr 7, 20261 min readBy hbb

A smooth blood donation experience depends not just on the process itself, but also on how you prepare before and take care afterward.
Before Donation
To ensure a safe donation:
- Get a good night’s sleep
- Eat a healthy meal (avoid oily food)
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid alcohol before donation
During Donation
- Stay relaxed
- Follow instructions from medical staff
- Inform staff if you feel uncomfortable
After Donation
- Rest for at least 10–15 minutes
- Drink fluids (juice/water provided at camps)
- Avoid heavy lifting for the day
- Eat iron-rich food (spinach, lentils, meat)
Common Misconception
Some people fear weakness after donation, but proper hydration and nutrition prevent this. During outdoor donation camps (common in Nepal), weather conditions matter, stay hydrated especially during summer.
Taking simple precautions ensures that your donation is safe, for both you and the recipient.
